At the Royal National Gallery in London, the bumbling Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is a guard with good intentions who always seems to destroy anything he touches. Unless, of course, he's sleeping on the job. With the chairman (John Mills) blocking Bean's firing, the board decides to send him to a Los Angeles art gallery under false credentials. When Bean arrives, his chaos-causing ways are as sharp as ever, and curator David Langley (Peter MacNicol) has the unenviable task of keeping Bean in line.

Critics Consensus

Bean boasts a terrifically talented physical comedian in the title role, but his constant mugging and silly slapstick quickly wear thin.

Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Brandon Judell indieWire How many English language films can say, "To hell with America!"? Very few. Basically only "Bean", which has already racked up over $100 million before the picture has even unspooled in one New Jersey mall. Jun 12, 2018 Full Review Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Mike Clark USA Today We'll forgive England for the Spice Girls. Maybe even Benny Hill, Joan Collins, Boy George, Fergie and that habit of pouring milk in tea. But with Bean's arrival, it might mean war. Rated: 1/4 Jan 10, 2018 Full Review Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: B Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) On television, Bean is charming. In a feature film, directed by Mel Smith, the schtick is overkill. Rated: C Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Atkinson isn't afraid to use a few of his best skits from the original show in this theatrical venture, but he adds enough new elements to be thoroughly fresh. Rated: 7/10 Sep 10, 2020 Full Review Bean | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Rob Nelson Boston Phoenix Atkinson's reactive brand of bug-eyed and near-silent comedy has always been more akin to Jacques Tati--plus a lecherous pinch of Jerry Lewis, the better to invade the viewer's personal space. GABRIEL S the greatest comedy character in history Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Houlden M For what should be a celebration of Mr Bean it's unfortunately an unfunny best of Bean compilation on the surface and a painfully drawn-out family drama at its core Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Jason R still enjoyable to watch as Mr Bean causes trouble Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Igor S This is a classic. For newer audiences, Bean may be considered outdated in terms of comedy and/or may make much sense plot wise, but that's what makes it so good: it's silliness. You almost have to look at it through the eyes of a child, otherwise, you may find it boring or too silly.I used to watch this in the early 2000's with my then brother in law and we would cry laughing, time and time again. I have watched it again today and the person i watched it with let out 1 or 2 small, contained laughs. Honestly, instead of feeling bad about it, it made it even more funny to me. I feel like that's how most people will feel about this movie: either they will love it or hate it/find it ridiculous.
